PFS installed a series of helical piers for tower base and accompanying instrument building. Installation of helical piers were found to be the most advantageous solution after evaluating soil profile and related site conditions with limited access. Conventional concrete spread footings would not meet the tension and compression loading requirements without helical piers. Materials used included Chance SS175 – 1 ¾ square shaft with 8-10-12-14 inch leads and plain extensions to obtain required torque and meet the minimum ultimate capacity as required. 3/4 x 6 x 6” new construction plates were terminated to embed in concrete for tension and compression loading. All phases of installation were designed by a structural engineer and depths and torque recorded by a 3rd party geo-technical representative to meet stringent design requirements.
